Three Sister Pass

Where:

  • Three Sisters Pass

When:

  • July 27, 2024

Who:

  • Ed, Dave, Oak, Craig

Trailhead:

  • 11.9 km (15 minute drive) from the Canmore Nordic Center on the Smith Dorrien (Spray Lakes) road
  • the parking area is a hidden roundabout on the right side of the road with a tree separating it from the road
  • the trail starts across the road and just south of the parking area up the creek drainage

Degree of difficulty:

  • 615 meters
  • 6.4 km hike
  • flat start for half a km and then a tricky ascent that involves several technical scrambling areas
  • due to the scrambling and challenging route finding it is not for the faint of heart
  • the hike took us just under three and a half hours, but we went up beyond the saddle at the summit

Interesting notes:

  • short trail that offers some incredible views and especially of the Three Sisters and Mount Lawrence Grassi at the summit
  • there are also views of the Goat Range to the south and the Bow Corridor ranges to the north
  • it’s not a very well known trail, so we only saw eight other people on the trail
  • the naming of Three Sisters Pass comes from the Three Sisters mountains, which were named in 1883 by Albert Rogers, a nephew of Major A.B. Rogers, who was the first settler to name the mountains when he saw the sides of the peaks covered in snow resembling three praying nuns
