Review Of My Recent Reads

I have always enjoyed reading, and Life 3.0 is presenting me with more time to do so.

Here are four books that have recently filled my time on trains, planes, beaches and my front room.
The World’s Most Travelled Man by Mike Spencer Brown

  • Calgary raised chap that has traveled to all the world’s 195 countries with just a backpack since he embarked on his journey in 1990
  • he fully immersed himself in these countries as opposed to some people who just collect passport stamps
  • amazing that he has gone to some incredibly dangerous countries and how he was able to accomplish this and live to tell about it
  • being somewhat of a world traveler myself this book provided some fascinating insight into countries that are on my bucket list, while also providing further insight into the 34 countries I have been to

The President is Missing by Bill Clinton and James Patterson

  • this political thriller is about a cybercrime attack to the United States
  • in typical James Patterson fashion, this novel moved at a fairly quick pace, was easy to follow and had lots of action
  • I enjoyed it as it felt like something that was very relevant to our current times and could happen

A Gentleman In Moscow by Amor Towles

  • the story of a wealthy count who lives under house arrest for a poem deemed incendiary by the Bolsheviks
  • there is a reasonable amount of action considering the confined geography of only taking place in the famous Metropol hotel in Moscow
  • while I enjoyed the story, for its quality of characters and certain historical information, it was a long read that left the fate of the main characters somewhat hanging at the end

Bury The Living by Jodi McIsaac

  • a unique story as the main character loses family members during Northern Ireland’s infamous Troubles period in the 1980’s and 90’s and joins the IRA to fight for her countries freedom
  • thru a series of circumstances, she is transported back in time 80 years to the brutal civil war period where she tries to change the course of history
  • it was a fun and educational read especially coming on the heels of our trip to Ireland earlier this year
  • this book also left the main characters somewhat in limbo at the end
